Rock On - Bollywood Movie Review

Cast: Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal, Kenny Luke, Purab Kohli, Prachi Desai and Shahana Goswami
Director: Abhishek Kapoor
Rating: ****

A large number of our films are about life. Some are about music. Seldom has a film blended the music of life into the fabric of a film with such seamless expertise. “Rock On” is that rarity where every component, character and episode falls into place with fluent virility.

You know there’s great skill involved in the way the characters are interwoven into a pastiche of the past pain and the present gained. But the craft never shows up on screen.

In essence what we see in “Rock On” is that cliché called a slice-of-life cinema turned inside out. The story of four musicians, who have given up their true vocation in pursuit of routine ambitions, is nothing new.

The inspirational muscles grow into the plot through the subtle treatment of the characters, each crying from within without making a song and dance of their emotions unless we’re talking about the robust rock soundtrack created by composer trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy where the rhythms just blow your mind. The music manifests the protagonists’ emotions in a tangential light.

But the on-stage energy, so capably choreographed and captured in the film, is a very small part of the film’s epic design.

The stage where we see Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal, Kenny Luke and Purab Kohli come together and then fall apart is actually a metaphor for the podium of existence where life for this quartet of closet-musicians plays out a cruel game of hide and shriek.

For a film where wounded hearts bleed profusely, there’s very little melodrama in the treatment.

Director Abhishek Kapoor prefers understatement to bellowing out the message. The film brims over with un-italicised dramatic tensions. And that’s where Farhan scores as an actor. He is equally at ease expressing the angst of a thwarted musician and a husband whose sweet caring near-angelic wife (Prachi Desai) leaves no stones unturned to bring back a smile to her husband’s face.

The other marriage between the embittered musician Arjun and his tirelessly slogging wife Shahana Goswami is trickier. Here we see how the narration dodges and hops over the pot holes of pedestrianism, and converts the trite into the timeless by making the human relationships obtainable rather than obtuse.

The characterisations are first-rate. These people are all casualties of suburban paranoia brought into the frames of a film that requires no camera lenses to locate the strengths and foibles in their personality. We don’t need to pinpoint their pain and passion. We accept them as they are.

Covering a much wider distance than the acres covered by “Dil Chahta Hai”, “Rock On” simply redefines the human-interest drama by creating a plot that accommodates the highest notes in the range of human emotions without straying into shrillness… quite like the sweet Prachi, who sings Lata Mangeshkar’s “Ajeeb dastaan hai yeh” with disarming innocence and sincerity in a film where rock music is the propelling factor.

Aligned with pain and passion, every character builds his own hell and comes out of it without a discernible yell in “Rock On”.

Jason West’s cinematography makes special place for the heart in his art. While on the polished surface we see the glisten of sweat and the trickle of a tear intangibly, the camera shoots the sets in a light that constantly reflects the characters’ inner world.

And the seamless editing by Deepa Bhatia fuses the past into the present in a way that makes time appear to be a pivotal but unobtrusive character in the plot.

The performances are all so apt you wonder if any other actor could have achieved so much with such austere lucidity. Farhan believes in the less-is-more theory giving his role of the band’s lead singer all he has got without tripping over the scale.

Purab, earlier made an accomplished presence in “My Brother Nikhil”, imparts an impish cockiness to the drummer’s part while first-time actor Luke Kenny as the dying keyboards plays is poignant without bringing on the violins.

But the truly revealing performance comes from Arjun Rampal. As the embittered guitarist clinging to family and music with desperate bravado, his eyes convey a wealth of pain and hurt.

And we may well ask director Abhishek Kapoor the same question. Nothing Kapoor has done in his inglorious past prepares for the sheer guttural glory and power of “Rock On”.

Chamku - Bollywood Movie Review

Cast:
Bobby Deol, Priyanka Chopra, Danny Denzongpa, Irrfan Khan, Riteish Deshmukh
Director: Kabeer Kaushik
Rating: * 1/2

First things first - what kind of a name is “Chamku”? Is it the name of a detergent or a whitener? No, it’s the name of a Maoist-turned-government-assassin who later becomes an avenging angel.

This is director Kabeer Kaushik’s second film and he had raised hopes after his gritty “Seher”. One went to see the film with serious reservations about the name of the film and really nothing else.

One thought maybe Kaushik could turn around the luck of Bobby Deol, who is desperately in need of a hit. But soon you realise that Bobby, who plays the protagonist Chamku in the film, is luckless.

An evil Thakur shoots Chandrama Singh’s family. Chandrama’s name is shortened to Chamku by Maoist leader Danny Denzongpa and grows up as his favourite lieutenant. He’s serious, morose, with one single expression on his face. Clap clap, that’s called acting.

Then Chamku is encountered and lies in the hospital with the same depressed look as a government agent Irrfan Khan, dependable as usual, makes him an offer.

He’s now trained to kill, we’re told. So he goes around killing, till he meets lovely Priyanka Chopra, who is wasted in the film.

Here the director lets go of a potential comic sequence when Bobby is about to introduce himself to the girl.

Eventually love happens, songs happen, even pregnancy happens. So much happens and Chamku looks even more depressed. By then, so are you.

It doesn’t take you long to understand that the Maoists and the government-assassin- looking-to-get-out angle is just a guise for an often repeated revenge drama.

Danny’s character should have been etched out with better imagination. The action sequence set in a train is handled well, but it isn’t enough to redeem the film.

Honestly, there’s little shine in this “Chamku”.

C Kkompany - Bollywood Movie Review

Cast: Mithun Chakraborty, Tusshar Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Rajpal Yadav, Raima Sen
Director: Sachin Yardi
Rating: **

Apart from a rather sad and overdone vulgar joke on the surname ‘Jha’, “C Kkompany” steers clear of turning the comedy into full-fledged farce.

This is the down market “Munnabhai” of the year. It tells us, it is okay to be a loser as long as your heart is in the right place. The bank balance stands a chance of being enhanced by hook or by crook provided you can get the formula for converting the zero in your life to some zeroes in your cheques.

Unlike the avalanche of films with a trio of male protagonists from “Masti” to “Dhol” to “Golmaal”, this one isn’t about three jobless youngsters ogling up skirts and barking up the wrong trees.

The interesting mix of three generation of heroes played by Anupam Kher, Rajpal Yadav and Tusshar Kapoor, brings a span of social comment into the plot.

If Anupam (suitably wizened) is badgered by his rather innocuously ungrateful son and daughter-in-law, Rajpal is hounded by the pathos of being not tall enough to compete with the Bachchans of the world.

In fact, the film’s most touching moment ensues when Rajpal masquerading as a bird in a mall is confronted by his bitter wife and son. That moment defines the whole theme of working class mores as defined by the cult of globalisation and materialism and the ensuing guilt of the collective middle class as the attitude of anything-goes qualifies the way we mould our morality.

The idea of three losers forming a company to extort a positive morality out of subverted system of governance is not new.

“C Kkompany” gets it right on the plot level. However, the execution gets cumbersome with an excess of gags and episodes that run from the ridiculous to the mundane.

The most interesting character is that of the comic gangster Dattu Satellite, who loves Ekta Kapoor’s serials. Dattu’s ring tone is the signature tune of “Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Tthi”. And because the film is produced by TV tycoon Ekta Kapoor’s company (Balaji Motion Pictures Ltd), whole battery of Balaji actors troop in and out. The home-viewing treat becomes a casualty of overkill.

‘Plotshots’ are taken at Ekta. She sportingly allows herself to be bullied by Mithun Chakraborty’s character in her own office.

Also endearing is the sublimation of extortion and gangsterism as odes to philanthropy. One by one the episodes of this homage to Ram Gopal Varma’s underworld concoction move from the three losers to the wider good of society at large.

The narration loses its way in the journey. And “C Kkompany” ends up being neither here nor there. Just an interesting idea gone astray.

The performances tend to blend into the fabric of giggly gangsterism. The trio of ‘heroes’ get into their roles with the opposite of gusto. Mithun goes over-the-top with the much relish.

What makes us giggle are the digs at Ekta Kapoor’s saas-bahu serials and actors. But they cannot sustain two hours of comment on the quirks and mores of the middle class. Maybe this film had its heart at the right place. But the vision just doesn’t match up.

VoIP Solutions - The New Age Telephony

Voice over Internet Protocol(VoIP) is a more common term of ‘phone over the Internet’. If you have a reasonable quality Internet connection then you can get phone services delivered to your Internet connection. Before reaching the destination, the technology converts voice into regular telephonic signal. By using this service, you can directly make calls from your computer with the help of a special VoIP phone or a traditional phone connected to a special adapter. This function can either be included into the phone itself or in a separated box like a Analog Terminal Adapter(ATA).

Some people use VoIP solutions along with their traditional phone service, though VoIP solution providers usually offer lower rates than the traditional companies. Sometimes VoIP phone calls (even international) can be absolutely FREE. Several service providers are present who provide these type of “free” facilities. Examples are: ‘Free World Dial up’ and ‘Skype’. The service providers sometime permit to select an area code different from the area. On the other side, some VoIP providers do charge for a long distance call for outside calling area, just like the traditional wireless telephone service. And some VoIP solution providers permit you to call anywhere at a flat rate for a fixed number for a minute.

The VoIP-to-VoIP phone calls are sometimes free while VoIP calls connecting to Public Switching Telephone Network (VoIP-to-PSTN) may have an attached cost that is charged by the VoIP service provider.

There are three categories of VoIP service provider. These are, Single line resident/business plans service provider, B2B service provider-bulk organisational/terminal service provider (Business VoIP solutions) and RIP VoIP service provider.

You can use your computer while talking on the VoIP phone and some service provider offers service that can be used where a high speed Internet connection is not available. Using VoIP service in a new location may affect your ability to connect directly to emergency services. So, be ready to use the services of VoIP solutions but with due care.
